My dentist wants me to book an appointment with a hygienist but all they so is a scale and polish, I don't think it's worth £40. Does it have actual medical benefits or is it just a fancy tooth clean?

The leading cause of tooth loss in adults is gum disease so personally I'd pay £40 twice a year. Actually I pay £10 a month for two dentist exams and two hygenist visits per year.

Yes. My mom didn't take me to see the dental hygienist and now I have to go to the dentist office tomorrow to get a filling done on three teeth because she didn't take me to see the dental hygienist. Make sure you go to the dental hygienist every 6 months so you won't have to get any fillings. I had a filling done a few weeks ago. Trust me, IT HURTS LIKE A *****! you can't feel your face for like 12 hours because of the shot that they give you in your gums to numb you. But the shot doesn't numb your gums like it's supposed to. Instead it numbs your WHOLE FACE and doesn't do a DAMN THING to your gums.

It does have medical benefits because they can clean what your toothbrush and floss never thought of cleaning! They scrape plaque and calcium deposits off your teeth. Your toothbrush just can't get that stuff off. If those deposits build up, they get under your gums and cause your gums to be irritated and swollen and infected.
Get it done..you can tell a big difference. It's $40 worth of enjoyment just walking around licking your smooth teeth when they're done!

Only if you want to be healthy and have teeth! Seriously they have linked oral infections with cardiac problems. Gingivitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Go to the hygienist.

it is definitely worth it. not only will it prevent or treat many dental problems, such as gingivitis and cavities....proper teeth cleaning, done by a professional, gets all that nasty stuff that gets up under the gumline that gives you rotten breath...it has also been proven that poor dental habits can lead to heart disease, because the bacteria builds up and travels down into your chest cavity....trust me....taking care of your heart is definitely worth the money, even if you think that your teeth aren't :)

one must remember that the Bacteria on the teeth Staphpila cocci can in the long run add the risk of inflammatory disease , Heart trouble and other diseases like Arthritis .
Start today and get the job done , and insist that you get advice on the day on how to avoid getting Plaque again it will be £40pounds worth of education ,but we only appreciate things that are costly , and we tend to put those costly practises into regular use

No, its good as they get rid of stuff like tartar and other bits that you would not be able to get off yourself. Doing that prolongs the life of your teeth and thus reduces the amount of fillings etc you will need. As I don't smoke or eat badly, I only bother to go once a year which is enough.

Its best to have it done at least once a year as it is lot more cost effective than have major dental work latter.
