In my experience, talking about anything that has do with regular life and not their disease will cheer them up. Professing sorrow or pity about their condition only reminds them about it... and other people become so consumed with their illness that they forget about the person. What did they like to do before the critical illness? What was their profession? Do they like animals? Sports? Movies? See if they'd like to go somewhere (to get out of the house, hospital, etc) and do something. If leaving the house isn't possible, would they like to cook a meal? Have some carry-out brought to them? Chances are they like all the same stuff they did before...
Having said this, there are times when ill persons become consumed with their own disease and get depressed... if this is the case, just let them talk. Sometimes it can do a world of good to let someone vent. They may be angry, afraid, frustrated, confused, etc... and need someone to talk to about it all.
More than anything, let them set the pace and just be there for them... that's more important than anything.
Good luck and best wishes!

start telling them about jokes that u have heard. tell them about ur most embarassing moment, anything upbeat. they need sum1 there to keep their minds off what theyre going thru. i had a grandfather that i had to do that with. he was sick and bedridden with lung cancer that took him 3 months later. i hope that u have a good and long time with that someone that needs comforting in this stressful time in their lives and yours. good luck and God Bless.

Talk about anything that won't make them think of their condition. Talk about their life growing up and what it was like.

What is your ideal heaven? What do you wish you could have done to change the world? How long do you think you'll make it.
