You do not need anything to get to Canada if you are a US citizen, just a normal ID card.

According to this, passports aren't needed between Canada and the US for ground entry (car, rail, bus) until 2008. If you travel by air or boat, you'd need a passport effective January 2007.

As of January 2007 everyone needs a passport to cross the US/Canada border. Driving or flying, same rules apply. You may want to start the passport application process, because it is taking a LONG time for the govn't to process them.

At this point I don't believe a passport is required to travel from the U.S.A. to Canada but as always if you do have one it is smart to carry it with you.
