We got overpaid, and the Revenue were OK about us paying it back monthly over 12 months (no interest either!). If your income is such that paying over 12 months is difficult, they will accept a longer payback period, but you have to give them information about your financial situation.

You should not deny yourself a benefit to which you are entitled just because a mistake was made 5 years ago.

If you need to talk to someone, Citizens' Advice is a good place to go.

if the error was theres you should not have to pay it back if it was yours then the years you have not claim i would have thought would pay back the arrears. I personally think that this is one of the worst things the government ever brought in you are always in arrears.

It depends why you were overpaid.
If it was their mistake.....and God knows they make enough, they can ask you for it back but can't make you pay it.

If it was because of wrong info you gave them they will ask for it back and give you time to pay it....a small amount weekly for eg.

If I was you I'd go to your local Citizens Advice and get expert advice for free.
