I used to work in medical recruitment, so I know a bit about this. It depends what grade he is working at and whether he is in a full time position or does locum work. Even then it varies from hospital to hospital.

As long as he is working at the moment, he should be earning a decent wage. Some lower grades, like SHO (Senior House Officer) have trouble finding work as the NHS has plenty of SHOs, but if he is in full time work he should still be earning more then most people working in offices and stuff. The higher the grade, the more money he can earn and it's easier for them to find work. If he's up to Consultant level, he'll be loaded, he can be earning anything from £50 to £90 an hour. It's all down to the National Contract, which a lot of NHS hospitals have signed up for. The contract's aim is to reduce the hospital's spending, so doctor working at a contracted trust would probably be getting paid at the lower end of that scale, but it's still a nice tidy sum.

I once spoke to a doctor to whom I was calling about a locum position (for those that don't know a locum is a temparary job, usually covering sickness etc. but sometimes its to cover an ongoing position that can't be filled due to lack of money), this doctor turned down the job, saying he doesn't get out of bed for anything less than £70 an hour. I would sure love to be able to say that!

Lets just hope he doesn't read this eh?

Are you one of those chavvy footballers wives type who expect everything to be provided for you?

Most people would be more interested in the fact he is dedicating his life to helping the sick, but if his wage packet is his most interesting feature to you I'm sure he will see through you in no time.

It really depends on where they are in their career. If they are starting out, then probably not on great money and he will prob have quite a few student debts to pay off! If advanced in his career, the he will be very well off. If working privately, he's minted!

If he does private work he'll make a lot of money. If he is totally NHS he might be comfortable. Ask him if he does any private work, you need ask no more.
