Until very recently, people tended not to fall out with one another if they discovered that they held different views about religion.

There were three main reasons for this.

Most believers did not brandish their faith publicly, society had become increasingly secular in most major respects, and memories of the past's murderous religious factionalisms had bequeathed a reluctance to revive the problem. The latter's lingering consequences in Northern Ireland anyway served as a distasteful warning.

But all the major religions have become more assertive, more vocal, more demanding and therefore more salient in the public domain.

I believe the biggest problem we face now with religion is that with all the diverse denominations out in the world everyone is struggling to prove they are right instead of actually just following their beliefs and being happy with that. It doesn't matter who's faith is older or which one has the most followers. What does matter is if your personal choice in faith makes you happy and gives you the answers you seek. If so, enjoy that, if not then look elsewhere.

A lot of grief in this world would end if people would realize that although their answers are correct for them, they may not be the best answer for someone else.

Hey did you know that Christ became our scapegoat? lol. Until very recently? Are you talking about in relation to the history of the world? Why do Atheists and/or the non-religious say they respect everyone's beliefs but can't respect the fact that our mission from Christ was to go out and evangelize the world. I must admit that it is sad that some in the past have abused this charge by being forceful ( which is not the will of God) in their approach. Never the less it is our duty. There are many Christians today who do believe in sharing their faith with others. Because of this many souls are won to Christ and lives are changed for the better. I do believe in sharing my faith knowing that Christ will do for you what he did for me. This is a good thing. Peace to you my friend.

I'm not sure if I should respond to your banner question or the content, but in any case I think the current upsurge in religious beliefs and the rise in fundamentalisms across the religious spectrum has a lot to do with the insecurity the world is facing as we enter into a new millennium with the threat of declining natural resources, environmental catastrophe and the possible realignment of world powers if the status quo is not defended vigorously and with military force.

You have great command of the English language, but you truly lack wisdom. It is the very essence of true belief, and the great joy that accompanies it, to share such with other non-believers that they too may experince the same peace with God. Try reading Romans for a better grasp on Christianity. True belivers are not away with the fairies, as you say. We are attempting to spread the good news that Christ died for sinners.
