The ssp on the end of a name, means subspecies. Using your example, Staphylococcus aureus spp aureus, means Staph aureus, subspecies aureus.

If you see spp, that is different. Staphylococcus spp means speices belong to the genus Staphylococcus.

They are both strains of Staph, just different species. Ssp usually lives in the urinary tract and aureas usually lives on the skin. They are both refered to as MRSA because they are resistent to treatment with methicillin...
