She could be having an early menopausal bout. She could be having drinking or drug problems. She could be suffering from clinical depression - not all depression involves lying in bed and not moving.
There is a thing called an intervention and it takes different forms. With alcoholics, for instance, a group of family and friends confronts the person to let them know that they all love her, but here specifically is how her drinking is effecting their lives. It doesn't always work, but the idea is that a shock - coupled with support - can bring the person to face a problem they are avoiding. first the drink - and then whatever other problems are associated with the drinking.
You might consider something like this. If you have a doctor - a psychologist - a trained social worker - a neutral referee is often a help in a confrontation, because it can get very painful and very personal. Those doing the intervention need to prepare together in advance, and set out some clear ground rules.
Her husband ought to be involved, and perhaps even the children - they are old enough.
The walking out is a symptom. You need to find out the problem before you can help her solve it. It may be she doesn't even know what the problem is at this point and she is simply running from her fears.

I suggest you to support your sister all the way, pray for her...in life there are a lot of things you won't understand, however I want you to open your mind and try to at least support her harsh decision. life is full of twist and turns, and perhaps your sister has not been treated like a wife, like a Mother. is so unfortunately that sometimes people do not appreciate others. I seen so many wives who basically are like another piece of furniture in their house, Mothers treated like strangers, treated by their kids with such of little respect. I hope that if you (anyone) have your wife/husband, Mother, sister/brothers please show a little love, respect ...do something nice, say something nice to that person. Show you appreciate them. I hate when people die and hear other say "oh he/she was so nice" to me that's BS, too little too late. You must appreciate and help others here and now.
I hope your sister finds the right path. It's too bad she doesn't want to know anything about her kids, because you can always divorce your husband or wife but from your kids, never.
good luck and have a great day

she's going through a hard time and no-one may kno what it is! try to talk to her and ask if her health is ok. it could just be the fact that she has found someone else, but she does care about her children i can tell you that, she may just say she doesnt because of depression of not knowing what to do! just make sure you are there for her no matter what she is being like! good luck

It sounds like she's had a nervous breakdown and is suffering severe depression. Try to get her to a doctor or this may result in something worse, like possibly suicide or other reckless acts.
