I beg to disagree with the answerer who said a dentist would not prescribe hydrocodone (Vicodin). I've had an abscessed tooth for which the dentist prescribed Vicodin until I could get into the endodontist to get a root canal. If you have never had an abscessed tooth, you have no idea how painful they can be. The entire side of my face was completely purple and swollen. Also, when I had a tooth pulled in the past, the oral surgeon prescribed Lorcet, which is another brand of hydrocodone/Tylenol combination, for postoperative pain.

Dentists can and do prescribe limited prescriptions for Vicodin/hydrocodone. Oh, and I work for spine/general and orthopedic surgeons - they do prescribe this medication for all kinds of pain. What one has to be careflu with while using Vicodin (hydrocodone/Tylenol) combination is not to abuse it, not just because it is a narcotic, but because of the amount of Tylenol which could result in Tylenol toxicity if one takes too much. I, myself, have to be extra-careful because of an atrophied right kidney, which restricts the usage of all nonsteroidal meds.

Tylenol ...as well as other medicines are not "hurtful" IF taken as prescribed by a physician and not on a regular, every day overuse. Its when they are abused the damage comes in.

Yes they do make medications that are pure opiod analgesics (hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc)... but they mix them with non-opiods (tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen) for a reason...

The tylenol is not hurtful... in fact the two drugs work together better than the do seperately. The people who are prescribed straight opiod analgesics are people who really really need it... end stage cancer patients, people with severe spinal/nerve damage... you would not get that from a dentist.
