No. If a person does not believe, after truly examining the evidence, all he could conclude is that religion is a neutral spice in some people's life that adds a dimension to them, but doesn't really change their personality. We all know religious people who are jerks being religious, but were jerks before; and nice people who were nice before religion, and nice after.

For every war religion starts, there is another war started by some other idea - nationalism, imperialism, misguided paranoia. Then yu have to think about how many potential generals simply became monks.

Religion is neutral. The same guy who would use religion to start a war, will find another excuse if he were a rationalist. And the same nun who opens a soup kitchen would do the same in the name of humanism.

It depends. I have a church I really enjoy. It's extremely laid back and everyone is invited to partake in communion (not just those who are baptized or belong to my church) and that really means a lot to me. It means that we all put our differences aside and join in one powerful act together.

I really love the people in my church. They are community oriented and truly help those around them. Also, I've found that my church is one of the few places who not only has totally accepted my son who has mild autism but actually loves him and helps him. People there have watched my children grow and I think it's a fabulous place to raise children.
He is 17 now and has been offered a summer job there working as a camp counselor. It's because he's been there his whole life and they know him and know that he is far more capable than other people realize. He also works in the nursery and is a deacon and helps with communion and at different times is a greeter. My church has done all of this for him. He has had many opportunities over and over again because of the church he goes too. We also have a food pantry and both my children (they are near grown now) have been able to help with that and to be able to physically hand a person a bag of food who needs it is one of the greatest acts of human kindness there is. So I think it "can" solve all of the problems. It depends if the religion you belong to is in place to help or to judge. I think mine is to help. I could go on all day long about how my church has saved my life and made it a really good one.

No the problems are caused by those who use religion for their personal agenda. What religion supported the Iraq war. I say none but few fanatics do in the USA in the name of religion and they call themselves Christians and Jews.

(organised) religion promotes
- bigotry/intolerance (see homosexuality)
- ignorance (see creationism)
- tries to halt progress in favor of biblical views (see Galileo)
- tries to meddle in affairs of state

really, I could go on, but from my POV there is no doubt that mainstream religion has historically been and will continue to be a detrimental influence on society.

Religious power structures are vulnerable to abuse, and by god they have been abused over the years.

Well, Islam teaches us to strive for knowledge. Early muslim doctors and chemists developed algebra, chemistry, and biology.

So, you have to thank us for those.
