I'm a huge fan of pull ups as an exercise. I've been doing them in the gym for a couple of years. My max has been 12 for a long time. I've been doing a lot of reading on different ideas to improve how many I can do; my goal is to do 20.
I think I've finally found a good plan, and I began using it 3 weeks ago. It's fairly simple. Do one set of pull ups in the morning and one at night, each and every day. Do not do your max, but more like 75% of your max. Each week, add one to the number of pull ups you do. So, let's say you can do 10. First week do 7 every morning and 7 every night. Next week you do 8 and so on. When you get to 75% of your desired maximum you're there. You can test yourself once a week or so to see how you're doing. But don't max yourself very often.
It's very simple to do one set of pull ups and takes less than a minute. You could improvise a bar or buy one that you attach to a doorframe. I took a heavy handled broom and placed it over a couple of 2x4 beams in my garage for my bar. Already my max is 14, an increase of 2 from where I'd been stuck for a year.

- do as many chin up and then do 50 of the low chin up. The low chin up uses the same muscle set and therefore can improve your chin up.
- do the wrist curl 100 times. Some people can chin up but cannot grip the bar for long. This will help. That's why some instructor ask you to hang on the bar even if you cannot do any more to train your wrist.

Concentrate on the "negative" portion of the rep, IE the lowering part of the pull up. Here's what you do:
put a chair/stool/step ladder under your pull up bar. stand on it so your chin is over the bar. lower yourself as SLOWLY as you can. Do it again, except when your halfway down, pull yourself back up. Do this as many times as possible.
