Contact the engineering dept at the Spokane Falls Community College (spokanefalls.edu). Each year the engineers club has a contest to see who can make the longest ranged catapault within a dollar limit. I'm sure they'd be glad to pass on some info. If you do a search, the Romans called them onagers (since their rear end kicked up like a donkey).

maybe try the History Channel, they had a great program about how they engineered them in medieval times. also the biggest lesson they learned was to put the whole thing on wheels, it helps extend the distance of the projectile. have fun.
