Metal detectors use an inductive coil of wire to sense a change in the flux density, thus triggering a circuit to alarm you that metal is near the coil.

Not any type of metal will work. Only metal which can be polarized will have an impact on the magnetic flux around it, such as iron.

use a circuit with a inductor sensor- connect the sensor to a LED and power supply for a simpel detector. Sensitivity in detection usually can be adjusted on the sensor itself.
