Believe it or not, just forcing yourself to smile will help you start to feel better. Even if you aren't happy, the act of smiling causes your body to react physiologically and release "happy" chemicals in the brain. If you force yourself to wear an angry face, your blood pressure will rise, even if you aren't really angry.
Smiling won't make the things that are depressing you go away, but it can help you work yourself out of a depressed mood. Force your face into the biggest grin you can get and keep it that way. Then force yourself to laugh out loud... it doesn't matter if it sounds fake. Do this for a few minutes without thinking about anything but the way your face is stretched into a smile and the action of taking deep breaths and forcing them into belly laughs.
Just concentrate on your body for that time. Sometimes you don't need to find positive thoughts... you just need to stop dwelling on the negative ones so much. There are some things you just can't change. So take a few minutes to think about nothing and just laugh.... then go do something different than what you were doing when you started feeling depressed.

Depression to some extent is normal for everyone but if it's become a chronic problem, I strongly suggest you consult your doctor or psychiatrist.
Depression is not necessarily triggered by unpleasant circumstances or problems. It can be caused by something as simple as our brain being unable for some reason, to secrete ample amounts of Seratonin, which elevate the mood. The simplest cure for this is a prescription of Prozac, which helps restore the normal secretion of Seratonin.
There are some other methods to raise Seratonin levels in the brain- the best being to eat a really hot chilli-pepper. Sounds strange but when your tongue gets that intense burning sensation, the brain automatically steps up Seratonin secretion to soothe itself. This in turn alleviates depression. Proof of this is that cultures that indulge in extremely spicy food suffer lesser from hormone related depression.
The second is a sweeter option: Eating dark and rich chocolate. But you'll need to consume a lot more than one or two bars to pep up the Seratonin to desirable levels.
One of the best things to do when depressed is to talk about WHAT EXACTLY is depressing you to someone dear such as a relative or friend and discuss the issue with them in depth. Just talking and discussing will help you feel better because you'll know what to do and what you cannot do.
If there is a particular situation or a series of circumstances that are causing the depression, just sit comfortably in your bedroom, with paper and a pen. Write down exactly what's bothering you in one column and the ways to overcome that in another. In the third- write what you plan to do to overcome the situation.
Above all, dont brood too much. Depression is a modern day illness that's as widespread as common colds, though it's not as evident. Honestly- there's nothing really as serious in this world to be so depressed about. Money problems: They can be resolved with hard work and determination. Relationship issues: They hurt the other one as much as they hurt you. Ill Health: Worst case scenario...we'll die. We have to someday.
And remember- YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I think about how lucky i am to have the friends and family that i do. I also think about how much i have instead of focusing on what i don't have. Every day is a new chance to have a positive experience and to share that with the people around you. Every body has days when they are feeling down. If you can't bring yourself out of if, you may need to see a doctor about it. He/She can prescribe a good antidepressent.

I agree with barb! Kudo's to you Barb!
I too think of the elderly, the poor etc. And go out and help them.
Other then doing that I find taking a bath and being around loved ones help, and also being outdoors in the sun light helps a bunch too. If you don't feel like doing anything or going outside, FORCE yourself to do it.
Good luck

i always try to think about the homeless, the elderly, and the many that are disabled and how fortunate you are to even be able to ask this ? cause you must be in a warm home with power and internet to boot. maybe if you go and spread some cheer to those who arnt so fortunate you'll be rewarded with a good feeling inside to override your blues. not to mention if you are buzy you'll think less about whats bothering you. the way one feels is controled by the one whos feeling.
take charge make your mind love your emotions and vise versa.
you'll pull out of it. i hope.
if not better soon call your doctor. wish you well.

if you have a family or a certain someone you care about. if you have any siblings, nephews, nieces. my little sisters brought me out of my depression so fast. its hard as hell, one of the hardest things i had to do. but i remembered thinking of their cute little faces and I wanted them to be happy and not see me the way i was. now I look at things in a whole different way. the mountains are prettier, the nature. also think of events you don't want to miss out on. future graduations, marriages, new babies being born. I would have missed out on all of that had I not pulled myself together

Thinking come from feeling. Go somewhere to shiny nice place first ... positive and negative live always together, remember that this is a wheel and only you can move it to right side.
