Well supriya,
You are talking about cellphones and car.

Nearly 35% of Indian population eat only once a day!
Care for that before going to cellphones and cars.

The main reason behind India's poor status is:
the accumulation of money among the wealthy.

For example: There are 1 crore people in India who are having small vegetable vendor jobs and depended on them are around 6 crore people. They are solely depended on the vegetable market. Now, reliance as entered the business - reliance fresh. Remember, reliance as already got business in all the fields oil, internet, textiles, energy and are worth millions and millions of rupees.

Why should they enter in that business and disturb the life of poor vendors?
Does any national political party as any guts to challenge reliance?

Your country is making great strides on how well the populace eats and lives their daily life. I would think that today's Indian would have as good a chance for success as an American has from birth. Automobiles of the future will take a drastic change and a country that doesn't have many of the ones today that run on gas will be better off to make the change over to the more efficient Automobiles of the future. They will be cheep and easy to up keep.

Well for this I consider there are two basic reasons

1) Necessity
2) Priority

Being a part of a developing country like Indian the residents of it are surely regulated by these two basic things ---> NECESSITY and PRIORITY ...as soon as the very thought of acquiring any thing comes in our mind we follow a very pragmatic approach and analyse the case with these two basic elements ...how much essential a mobile is for me when I work in the office where I work ??? how much essential a car is for me when I can easily get a bus from my home to the place I wanna go ??? these are the few questions which come in our mind ...after analysing all such questions only we prefer to go for a thing ...

and definetly to end with the biggest factor is MONEY ...well it does not play a major role in deciding for a mobile (thanks to techno boom in telecom industry) but ya surely for things like CAR it do matters

The short answer is poverty. The long answer is a combination of things. Poor infrastructure, too much past government protection etc... Unfortunately part of the present increase in wealth is due to a more globalized capitalistic approach, which provides greater wealth to the country as a whole, but spreads the wealth very unevenly.

we already have terrific traffic jams on roads and in the communication networks. India is not a poor country, we have enough money scope for improvement and it is happening right here in front of us. Indian economy is now accelerating at a greater speed. By 2025 we will be leading the world as we were 500 years back. (before british rule) Watch it.

If you are talking about the United States I would need to see some proof of your numbers because they appear extremely low especially related to automobile ownership. So my suggested reason behind it is that your numbers are incorrect. The accepted standard for car ownership in most developed countries is in the range of 30-50 cars per 100 people. This puts the number well above 2%.

Edit: This changes the situation and if you had made the question specific to India I would not have answered.

If in a family, there are 4 mbrs (avg Indian family), then it is enough for them to own only one car. But the survey could have said only abt the head of the family. (so multiply 2% with 4)

Apart from that
1) population
2) Opportunity
3) Education
4) Lack of Hard working capability
5) ill usage of resources
6) Politics

Well, poverty is measured in terms of mobiles & cars!

If 60 out of 100 are not having food and shelter, even if the remaining 40 out of 100 have mobiles & cars, can you say we as a country, a "rich" nation?

The reason is overpopulation, unemployment, poverty, inflation etc. All these are related problems and india has to find solution to these problems to ensure that it feeds its population. These days people talk of a 100% literacy rate, I suggest we ensure three square meals for 100% of our population in india.

Bahut na insaafi hai.
This is not due to poverty. I owns a car. Car is not necessary for all. Rich can use bicycle. Rich can live without mobile. If you live without car and mobile, you are safe and safe from challans. I have mobile and I use it in car. Now fine will be more. I can not live without mobile. I may sell car. Govt. should must assist poor so that they can buy mobile phones and cars. In Delhi, residents of hut are using mobile / cars.
