they are both FDA approved, so technically they are both safe -

lexapro is generally used for treating depression and generalized anxiety disorder, while prozac is used for treating depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia, and panic disorder, to name a few SO BY those standards, one would have to say prozac is more effective....

Prozac can really help some people but I know that some of the newer drugs have less side effects. Lexapro for instance. Cymbalta is good too if you don't have high blood pressure. Don't worry about getting hooked on Anti-Depressants. That doesn't happen. It is true that should you decide to go off you need to do it gradually for safety's sake but you won't have withdrawals from it or cravings for it like you would for Narcotics. I don't believe everyone needs prozac that gets it, but I do know for people that do need something like that, it can make a profound difference in their quality of life. Because people have different body chemistry from one person to the next, which one works best will be different from person to person. Someone above mentioned how Prozac affected them negatively. It is not unusual for a person to try different ones before finding what works best for them.

It's my belief that there are fewer problems and better results with Lexapro. I don't believe that it causes decreased libido in women. Prozac seems to work better for men. Unfortunately, Prozac was overused about 5 years ago. It was the wonder drug and prescribed for everyone. I don't think it works as well for women as men. Just my opinion drawn from observation.

I take Lexapro and it isn't nearly as effective for me as Zoloft, Effexor, Celexa etc...

Prozac is a classic and has a long term for which it stays in the body. I would try prozac if it's for anxiety, but everyone is different.

I have heard better about lexapro. but one thing about it is it makes you happy but it has sexual side affects like no libido, lost erection, stuff like that. but maybe thats not an issue in your life right now. prozac can do the same things to. they are in the same family so they all work together. also lexapro helps with panic and anxiety where as prozac doesn't. another one to look into that is absolutely wonderful is cymbalta :) good luck

I took Lexapro for bi-polar depression and I did have sexual side-effects (so it can have sexual side-effects for women, too).

It also didn't work for me. Now I take Abilify.

Try either one-- see what works for you.
