How can we promote peace between Atheists and Theists?

I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

Ummm, where did I say "all"?

- Respect for others and for their right to their own opinion and lifestyle
- Accepting that no one is in possession of a final truth

First of all there is no such thing required between Atheists and theists. Out of 6 billion popoulation in this world, the theists will be less than 1%. The biggest problem is between theists Vs theists. They quarrel between by argueing whether my god is correct or your god is correct. Whether my image of god is right or your's is right. If anybody can think about peace there, the whole world will be at peace. So, I invite all to leave their imagination and come to the reality.

I just LOVE these generalizations! Let's take the "ALL" out of the assumption of this generalization, please.

Not "all" atheists and theists are at "war" with each other. Some are, some aren't, and some just don't care.

Your PRESUMPTION is that we should promote "peace" between them... why? Why can't there be differences? Why must we have "peace" between these differences? What is YOUR definition of "peace" anyway? Does "peace" mean silence between the two? Does it mean "no killing"? And why must there be "peace" between such diametrically opposed viewpoints? There never will be. Do we keep it at a "low roar"?

Do you want one to respect the other's viewpoint? Is that your definition of peace? Respect for another is different from agreeing with their views. I can say, "you have a right to believe what you believe, but I have a right to say you are wrong." I can also say, "I respect that you have a different view, but your view is simply wrong, it is not right." So we could have mutual respect with no agreement, but is this your vaunted peace?

Both views are held in firm conviction by their respective believers, so there is no middle ground to agree upon. So there's no peace there. Is there right and wrong? Do both sides believe there is right and wrong? If so, then both sides will always be at "non-peace" because there is no grey area.

So... there may never be the ability to have a peace extant between the two, therefore trying to promote something which cannot exist, cannot happen. i.e. you may not be able to ever promote peace between the two.

Personally, I think that if everyone thought about religion the way they think about food, we'd all be fine.

And if we all used the same manners that we would at a dinner party, we'd get along great.

If you're hosting a dinner party and a guest doesn't care for something you're offering, I'd hope you have the good manners to be gracious about it, and neither force the food on your guest nor criticize your guest for not wanting it. If you're a truly gracious host you'll remember what people don't eat, and try to remember not to serve that again when you have the same guests.

And if you're a guest and your host offers you something you don't want, I'd hope you have the good manners to simply say "Thank you, but I don't care for any" instead of lambasting your host for offering it or criticizing what they have prepared. If you're a truly gracious guest, you will not expect your host to remember your food preferences or to tailor the menu to suit just you.

And certainly none of us need to spend a lot of time bad-mouthing what other people serve to their families.


I tend to think that religions are like family food traditions - the trick is in knowing what to put in your mouth and what to leave on your plate.

Tolerance. However, I do find that with many types of Christian - and YES, I am aware that this does not mean all of them - they simply cannot tolerate that any aspects of any religion other than their own are valid. That gets peoples' backs up.

I am prepared to accept that many people do get something out of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism etc, and that something makes their lives happier in some ways, so I'm happy to leave them to it. I don't try to drag them over to my religion (even if I can't resist winding them up now and then...)

Here is a big difference between many Atheist and Theists you could consider; many atheist have read the "holy books" of other religions because they are open minded and like to educate themselves and understand why people think the way they do. How many theists can you say that for? Not many, I bet.

point out and embrace our similarities. For eg, what i have in common with some people (theists and atheist alike) is my desire to change the world, or even travelling through europe. Now if we get together and talk about that there is peace and love and comraderie and all those good things. The key is to talk about what we have in common not what makes us different. On that note we have to agree to disagree and then dwell on what we agree on.

As an atheist, i do no longer see why one might might desire to transform from one to the different with a view to sell the recommendations of love, sympathy, empathy, etc. those recommendations at the instant are not mutally unique to one concept or the different. they're wide-unfold. Cordial and respectful personal relations are very important.

However, this doesn't mean that anyone should be free to propogate whatever untruths they wish, and expect that their ideas and beliefs will be quarantined from criticism. Free expression is vital, but for everyone - many religious groups seem to believe that their version of truth should be above critique, and claim hurt feelings when this occurs, as it should.

Truth is too important.
