Any reputable breeder will tell you when to feed your puppy, how much to feed your puppy and the type of food to feed your puppy. You must stick to this feeding plan as any alteration will cause him/her to get diarrhoea which in a puppy is very dangerous as they can dehydrate very quickly. The breeder will give you some food that your puppy has been eating which should be enough until you can get some of the same type.

After you have had your puppy a while and if you should want to change his/her food (maybe because he/she is not being nourished enough as in some cases this can happen) introduce the puppy to a small amount of the new food mixed in with his/her regular food until you have completely changed the food. This should be done very slowly as again a sudden change of diet can cause diarrhoea. Normally a change of food in a puppy should take about 10 days. This is true for when you need to change his diet from puppy to adult dog food.

As your puppy grows his food intake will increase but his requirement of total meals will decrease from perhaps 4 meals a day to 3 meals a day and so on until you feed him just once a day ( when he is about 12 -18 months old).

Enjoy your puppy and I am sure he will enjoy your company. King Charles Spaniels are adorable little dogs, but with all spaniels they can be a bit boisterous if not trained from an early age. At the age you will be getting him he will be able to learn the basic commands of sit, stay and down. Sit is the easiest command to teach your puppy.

I have raised 3 puppies now and still enjoy raising them.

If it is a good breeder, you can contact them to figure out what fod they eat and how much they need. Do not change a puppies food-it will cause a very bad stomach upset and can kill the puppy. CONTACT THE BREEDER FOR DETAILS. Some breeders will give a weeks supply of food to make sure they wont fall ill. Write it down. If you do end up running out of food, feed them some boiled chicken and rice.

Ring up the breeder if your getting it from one they will be able to answer all your questions.A good complete puppy food will be fine just get a small bag at first until you know if she likes it All the feeding guide lines will be on the pack, do take care not to feed her too much to soon small meals often is best.

If you are buying from a reputable breeder, they will provide you with instructions for feeding your puppy. KC Accredited breeders must supply you with written instructions. If you are buying from another source, make sure the parents of your puppy have been tested for eye & heart problems - the breeder should be able to provide written proof that this has been done.

When you pick your puppy up from its breeder he/she should supply you with all the relevant details you need to rear your puppy, you should get a diet sheet, training tips,a small amount of the food the breeder uses, all KC paperwork, etc,
if not ask your puppys breeder for all these things,
good luck with your new puppy

This is a very good question to ask, as Cavliers are very difficult to keep thin!

You'll be feeding puppy food for about the first 12-18 months. After that, switch to a high quality dog food, preferably dry. By 'high quality' I mean not your regular supermarket junk. You can ask the breeder (if you're getting from a breeder) what they feed, but if they answer something like 'Pedigree Chum', they don't know what they're talking about! Once the puppy is fully grown, you will need to feed it for it's ideal weight (about 8kg typically) as per the guidelines on the food packet. Beware of food packets whose guidelines are only for 'small, medium or large' dogs - not usually a sign of high quality food!

Just be careful, because although Cavvies are my favourite breed, you hardly ever see an adult one that isn't overweight. As a guide, adult Cavvies should weigh about 6-10kg. Keep an eye on yours throughout his adult life, and if he doesn't resemble the ideal shape (as in the email link below), you need to try a different food!

Assuming you're not buying from a puppy farmer - the breeder will give you a detailed diet sheet.

Get in touch with the breeder they will be able to tell you what he's been eating and they should give you at least a couple of days supply when you pick him up Friday!

Ask the staff at the pound what he's been fed on so far. Generally they feed them dry puppy kibble. You are getting a rescue dog from the pound and not from a breeder or pet shop, right?
