Basic Buttercream Icing
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening (Crisco)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
4 cups sifted confectioners (10X) sugar, about a 1 pound box
2 tablespoons milk
Cream butter and shortening with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape bottom and sides of bowl often.
When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.
Prepared icing will keep for 2 weeks if refrigerated in a tightly covered container.
Frost cake as desired. If adding color to frosting, remember that liquid food coloring will thin the icing. Use paste food colors. If unavailable, gel food coloring will do in a pinch.
For writing: Thin down icing until of desired consistency with a little milk. Spoon into decorator bag that has been fitted with desired writing tip.
Using a toothpick, carefully write desired message on iced cake. Use this as a guide for writing on the cake. Before doing so, it's best to practice a bit on a plate to get a feel for the pressure required.
Edible glitter may be purchased through Wilton at www.wilton.com, and most kitchen supply stores. Some department stores carry this also.

I believe that you can get special icing pens and stencil forms to make sure your writing fits on the cake and is legible. The icing is of course legible. Try your local cooking shop or alternatively look for Lakeland Limited in your address bar and you might find something there.
Good luck.

powdered sugar and milk mix it together, it is wet, but will harden, (like when you get cinnamon buns)
they sell the colored sugar that look like sparkles maybe try mixing it together
they have pastrey bags, with various tips to make designs,
you know they sell decortive icing in the stores, it would be eaiser than making yourself crazy, no fuss, no mess they may have sparkley ones too.
