The Sunlander Travels from Cairns to Brisbane (www.traveltrain.com.au)

The Countrylink has a express passenger train from Brizzy to Sydney and Sydney and Melbourne (www.countrylink.com.au)

Great Southern Railways Run the overland train from Melbourne to Adelaide (10 hours).(www.gsr.com.au)

And the Indian Pacific From Sydney to Adelaide to Perth, 65 hours from Sydney and 45 hours from Adelaide to Perth. (www.gsr.com.au)

Otherwise Buses from Cairns to Brizzy, Brizzy to Sydney, Sydney to Melbourne, Melbourne to Adelaide, but i do not recommend catching the bus from adelaide to Perth, as its a really boring 40 hour trip that gets very uncomfortable on a Bus.... But the other journeys would be alright i think by bus. (www.greyhounds.com.au)

It would be cheaper tho to Fly, especially from Cairns to Brizzy, and Brizzy to Sydney, and Sydney to Melbourne. But the Overland and Indian Pacific are not overly expensive!

Hope that helped...
Happy Travelling........:)

I did Sydney-Melbourne by Greyhound bus and the same from Melbourne -Adelaide. I flew from there to Perth as the only other way is by train and it takes about 2-3 days and is through desert. The plane was about 3 hours. I actually got a greyhound bus pass when in Oz and paid extra for the odd journey not included.

Unfortunately - the cheapest (other than hitch hiking) is to FLY but then you don't get to see the country as you travel. Bus is good but it does take a long time.

So it is a case of how long do you have to visit all the places you mention. Bus from Adelaide to Perth is a long trip. You see the whole countryside but after a while it might get pretty monotonous (and you might end up wishing you flew)

You will have to make a choice of Time vs cost vs what is "best" for you

Have a nice trip. Enjoy what Aust has to offer.

Look into getting the train. There's one that runs down to Sydney from Brisbane I think, although you may be able to get it form Cairns - you'll need to check.

You can get a train from Sydney via Adelaide to Perth too.
Ask at a backpackers for some advice, there are loads along the seafront in Cairns.

Wow! Nice travelling then. One of the best sources of accommodation in Australia is the YHA. They are clean and cheap too. You can find almost in all cities in Australia. Too much to visit and do in Sydney. There are Sydney Hop-On-Off Red and Blue bus in Sydney for easy travelling around.

Cool and Lots of Arts in Melbourne- my favourite city. Also know as "Most liveable city in the World" Transport is very easy with the tram and the road system is easy in the city. Free tram also available. Top spot - Docklands, Crown Casino Complex. Shopping - Myers and Central Mall. Lots of cafe bar and best spot is Brunetti. Must visit is the Victoria Market with lots of souvenir.

Perth - More relaxing. But I love Freemantle. Nightlife is best at Northbridge. You may try your luck at Burswood Casino.

Well then, travelling by train or bus from Sydney - Melbourne-Adelaide is easy but to continue to Perth....mmmm its very far as it is from one end to another end of Australia. But you may connect via train from Adelaide to Perth.

Remember, accommodation is best and cheap at YHA Hostelling.

Happy travelling............

I've hitched all over the country but if you are female and on your own, I don't recommend it, otherwise, go for it - it's great fun. The cheapest way to travel is by bus then air unless you have concessions when train becomes viable. If you want to spend two and a half days sitting up on a train, the Indian Pacific is not too expensive but it becomes more so if you want a sleeper (recommended).

Your mode of travel will depend on your budget and time you have. obviously travel by road or train takes longer and is sometimes more costly/ You can get some real bargains on domestic flights in Australia these days with jetstar and virgin blue. Howver going by road or train you do get to see more of the gorgeous landscape.
The train journeys would be my choice if i had time.
