wow. they are both milestone birthdays. one a a whole year and the other is ready to start school, a big boy. I would make a big deal about both.
--maybe for the oldest have a small party with his friends like to chuck e cheese or bowling, something like that to make him still feel he is still special, but on a different day. -- or maybe have the grandparents over to celebrate his big boy birthday without presents
--for the big party, get decorations for both of them--1st birthday themed and whatever the oldest is into
--have 2 separate cakes for them
--send out separate invitations for both of them
--make sure you talk to your son and reassure him that he is still special, not to overshadow the youngest being 1.
--make sure you get everthing on video and take lots of pictures of both
--make a big deal about both while having the party

Just reunite family and friends. They both will feel special ,but remember the 1 year old odnt understand anything that goes around but still will have a blast running around if he is already walking and poppin some balloons.. hehe that what my son did at his b-day. He had so much fun with everyone. Now your 5 year old understand more the concept of a b-day party, so invite some friends of his preference. And dont worry your 1 yera wont feel left out at all, he will enjoy the fun!!! Just remember to capture those moments ,so as he grows you show him the pics or videos of his 1st b-day.

My sister and my brother were born 3 years and 1 day apart so they always had their birthdays together. You could make two different small cakes for each of them so they can blow out their own candles. Let them unwrap their own presents. Let the 5 year old unwrap one and then the 1 year old. This way they'll know everyone's attention is focused on them while they're unwrapping each of their presents. Their bday will be special no matter what you do. Kids love to celebrate their bdays. My sister and my brother never had a problem with celebrating their bdays together. Actually I was the one who felt left out because my bday was 2 1/2 months later than theirs and i didnt have anyone to share it with.
