It's a subject I have debated many times in the past and yes I would say yes it should be banned.
I class it as a distraction to drivers, the passangers and others on the road while driving just like mobile phones and even eating in the car which I believe someone got fined for eating an apple once - bizarre.
So yes I would be all for it! I am not trying to take smoking away from people but isn't driving to focus on where you're getting and looking out on the road instead of lighting one up and puffing away?

Anything which can take a drivers attention off the road should be considered unsafe and looked at very carefully. Banning is a strong word and is all too easily brought into these types of debates, though sometimes it is justified.
Personally i would bring in a law which says if you must smoke whilst out on the road, then pull over and stop to do so. If you need the nicotene stick to calm yourself, for example, then you are not in the best state for driving anyway. Drivers would be expected to pull over if they had to make a phonecall and do not have a hands free kit, so the same principle could apply to smoking.

Yes
Especially if there are children in the car.
Opening a window isnt good enough.
Do these people not care about their children when their own pleasure might get disrupted.
Makes me sick.
But.
I do think people should be allowed to smoke.
At least it keeps the population down, almost as well as religion does.
Everyone should have the right to do anything to themselves as long as it does not affect anyone else. That includes smoking.
Every packet should an even bigger warning saying you will not get treted for smoking related illnesses on the NHS. No matter how skint you are.

Logically it should be banned b'cos apart from the ills of smoking known to everyone, smoking in cars can be a source of distraction( especially if u r lighting one while driving) & may lead to a crash.
While many long time car smokers may scoff at the idea but its taking precautions which can avoid the inevitable.
Its like the good ol' saying ' Smoking in bed is dangerous. The ashes that fall could be your own!'

Very interesting question and one I've often pondered on myself. Incidentally I am a smoker (not proud of it). In the news recently someone was fined for throwing a cigarette end out of the car window. Another incident someone was fined for flicking ash out of their window (yes, honestly). This means that drivers are now being forced to use their ash trays in the car which, as I'm sure even a non smoker knows, is well out of their line of sight.
As a smoker I am very "torn". I wish to continue smoking whilst I'm driving (although I don't do it a lot). I do not condone littering and, to an extent, agree that cigarettes should not be thrown out of car windows (although I think not flicking ash out is taking it a bit far) yet I think it is potentially dangerous to try and stub a cigarette out in the ashtray whilst travelling at xxmph.
So there you go - the answer to your question is probably, yes. And that's from a smoker.

I've been driving professionally for about 38 years, no accidents and I have been smoking even longer.Using a cell phone takes your mind off your driving , So no to the smoking band.Maybe next they will not allow you to use the radio, cd player, and the like.I've seen DVD players mounted in Dashboards. Now, How dangerous is that?

Hi
I think smoking should be banned full stop, and further more, anyone who smokes in the vicinity of a none smoker should be prosecuted for willful endangerment because they KNOW they could be causing serious life threatening damage.
If you purposefully rammed someone in your car and they survived and intent was proven you would be done for attempted murder because you knew your actions could kill them.

Smoking SHOULD be banned when driving.
Driving requires your 100% attention and with a ciggy in your hand/gob your attention is only 50-50.
BAN SMOKING on the roads,in all pubs/clubs,hospitals etc.
