Regarding stopping addiction, that is not always possible because some people are pre disposed to addiction in one form or another, drugs, alcohol, gambling, smoking, overeating the list goes on. Preventive measures can be applied with education about the effects of addiction while the person is young. I am afraid that once the addiction has kicked in, it can never be cured, only controlled in the way that the person goes into recovery mode. This is helped by rehabilitation services and support groups such as NA and AA, who work on the twelve step program. I hope this helps and good luck with your project.

Saying we're predisposed, thus some addictions are not possible to stop is ludicrous. Imagine being predisposed to alcoholism (not really a disease, but for AA's sake,. we will say it is) - now imagine all their life the predisposed person lives in a one room house. They never leave it. Alcohol is never introduced the person or brought into the house - now tell me, is this predisposed person going to be an alcoholic? NO..
....People choose to try drugs/alcohol - - people choose to keep using drugs/alcohol. Even if you are an "addict" - if you get locked up and truly have no access - you get clean and you are no longer an addict. Not saying you won't get out and do it again but I don't understand how some pre disposed person can claim they're addicted if they've been locked up and drug free for a year ??!!
Okay, so as far as stopping addiction, I think one should use Rational Recovery (RR). It gets rid of the ludicrous disease concept, and it works!! - You are not "in recovery," - You QUIT! - once and for all..........

Knowledge of the wreckage, pain, guilt, and the after effects of being strung out for years and then get clean and try to fix all your problems you've been avoiding, masking, whatever.
The remedies, preventive measures and how to stop can be answered at a couple of Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
If you went to a couple good speaker meetings and talk to people, your biology project would be handled.
