want to know why and how does egg crates mounted on walls or irregular textured walls reduces sound reflection... is it the same as sound absorption?

It increases surface area. The deflection of the sound wave is relative to angle which it strikes the surface. The irregular shape of an egg carton causes the sound wave to strike multiple times before being projected back to the listener.
With each impact upon a surface of the soundproofing material more of the sound waves energy is absorbed

The same way a crumpled piece of aluminum foil obscures an image. You don't get reflection. The material deflects and absorbs instead of reflecting the sound energy.

It is a combination of sound absorbtion and diffusion. Used mainly to "deaden" a room and to cancel out early and late reflections that cause "smearing" of the sound stage.
