There are 2 products that I know of that keep produce fresh much longer. One is a green-colored plastic bag (I forgot the brand name) that absorbs the gases that causes rotting. This comes in boxes just like ziplock bags and you find it in that section of the store or by the produce. The other is a green plastic disk that you place in the crisper section of your fridge after peeling off the strip to allow it to do the same thing as the green bags. You can buy this in some stores, at the produce sections. Trader Joe's used to have it; try there.

It depends on the produce. You don't want to put a banana in the fridge, but you would just about any other fruit or veggie. I keep fresh herbs on hand all the time. Mostly Cilantro. With the herbs, get a paper towel moist, but not dripping wet, wrap around herbs and then put into a plastic baggy. Then into the fridge never the freezer. Freezing cause the water in their cells to burst the cell walls and make them mushy. It'll double if not triple their usage life. You can freeze diced onions, diced celery, sqaushes, things like that, but they're only good to put in soups or stews after freezing. A great trick an old Chef taught me for keeping carrots and celery like new for days and days was to submerge them in water and refridgerate. Good luck!

Yes - buy them from somewhere other than supermarkets! Fruit and veg from the likes of Sainsburys and Tescos take so long to get from the farm to the shelves, they're practically rotten by the time we buy them. Ideally, get your fresh produce directly from the grower in places like farm shops - you will be amazed how much longer it lasts. If you really can't get to a farm shop, try a delivery company like www.abelcole.co.uk , If you do have to use a supermarket, buy little and often.

There are lots of ways:
Buy smaller amounts more regularly (I know - this one is obvious!)
Buy loose veg and fruit as underripe as you can - the prepacked stuff goes off quicker. Give food air and space - where fruit and veg press together they go off quicker.
Buy from busy shops where the turnover is quick - a very busy Tesco will keep re-stocking so the food is fresher.
Put as much as you can in the fridge and keep potatoes in the cool dark cupboard. Store apples flat in a cold garage in trays - they will last a long time.

Buy from a farmers market, not from a supermarket where the food has been bought in bulk and then refrigerated to keep it looking fresher for longer!

the golden rule is that if it is an exotic item (pineapple, etc) or grown in a warm place, do not put it in the fridge. it will kill it. other than that follow the storage instructions or eat it all really fast!

try keeping it dry in the refrigerator, I use either kitchen paper or brown paper bags, this helps - as long as you don't use plastic which makes vegs etc sweat and thus ruin
