No, I don't think so. Their position of power makes the handful who *are* corruptible more dangerous than your average criminal, and power *can* corrupt. But that said? I think most police officers initially go into it in an effort to uphold law and order, and I think the majority of them manage to do an incredible (and somewhat thankless) job at it. It's a shame the bad seeds stain the rest of them.

NO however I beleive they do become jaded over time... seeing so much crime. Pulling dead babies and 5 year old boys out of trash bins and dealing with homicides, drug arrests, child molesters, and just plain bad people who repeatedly commit all types of crimes.
My detective friend has come to think that almost all people are out for themselves, evil, and do not think twice about doing wrong, and care nothing for rightious living. He has come to hate the criminal element so very much that he is hardened to the core. He is fair within his job. He has come very close to hating life... his own life. Home in his easy chair is where he feels the happiest. Psychologically he is a worn man... a very tough life a cop has.... I would not want the job. He is not a criminal as most cops are not. He just is so very tired from seeing such foolishness and evil in life... and he works hard every day to keep the bad off the streets and protect the innocent. Someone has to do it, otherwise our society would have complete chaos. Where would we be without cops ?

my brother-in-law is a cop and he's a very good one. He cares about saving others from the criminals. He is not inclined to be a criminal because it is not in his best interest. He knows not to jeopardize his family by doing criminal activities.

I have a very good friend who is a psychologist, we used to teach in adjoining classrooms. He did a study over a period of years for UT about the comparisons between cops and crooks interviewing dozens of convicts and cops. His conclusion was that there was a very fine line between the 2 and that it was a very strong moral conviction that kept cops honest that criminals lacked. The best part of his study was that most average criminals had an aversion to confrontation and physical violence towards their "clients" and cops were the complete opposite. We apparently had no problem with getting physical with our "clients".

No. Almost everyone I have known for the past 40 years has been in law enforcement, that's literally 1,000's of men and women. I can count the criminal officers on one hand. The crooked cop makes headlines because he is so rare. I worked for seven different police agencies and was a supervisor in two and the chief of my last. In that time, between those agencies, there was only one crooked cop, a thief, quickly caught, fired, tried, convicted and jailed.

personally, I have nothing against cops. The only time I don't like cops is when they're in my rearview mirror!

No. Sure, a few cops are corrupt, but by that same token, so were a few priests.
