Of course not.You have to talk about the subject of sex for the whole child's life. When at the age of 4 he/she asks "Where the babies come from?" and you answer that the mother and the father make it,then at the age of 6 you explain his/her parts of the body if he/she asks. When he/she sees something on TV and you explain that. When your daughter has her first period she already has to know about that and pads and tampons and other things. When your son has his first ejaculation he has to be prepared about that and he has to know that this moment will occur. You have to talk about sex for the whole life of the child, not at the age of 13 to say "Lets talk about birds and bees".

According to some, the birds and the bees is a metaphorical story sometimes told to children in an attempt to explain the mechanics and consequence of sexual intercourse. According to that story, a baby is created when a bee stings a bird. In some cases the choice of birds and bees may be because they provide a ready metaphor for insemination (pollination) and childbirth (hatching). However it may be called the "birds and the bees" in that it is simply the facts of nature; all creatures have sexual intercourse, birds, bees, and humans too.

"Word sleuths William and Mary Morris hint that it may have been inspired by words like these from the poet Samuel Coleridge: 'All nature seems at work ... The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing ... and I the while, the sole unbusy thing, not honey make, nor pair, nor build, nor sing

Parents that do that are uncomfortable with that subject. But they are really hurting their children by not communicating with them.

My 9 year old once asked me what is a Vagina, I was taken aback, but answered. It is what a girl has so she can urinate, just like you have a penis. Short and to the point. He was satisfied with the answer.

Another son, at the age of 11 asked me how are baby's made. I answered, by the seed of the daddy and the egg of the mommy. He then asked how does it get together? I answered the daddy plants the seed into the mommy. He was also satisfied with the answer.

I have other examples, but the key is to answer only the question, and not go into long drawn out answers. They really are only curiouse and once you give them a short direct answer they are satisfied.

Because of this approach, my children 7 of them all boys always felt free to ask me more detailed questions and I answered them according to thier age honestly, when they got older. If you answer them honestly, and matter-of -factly you keep the line of communication open. This way they get the real facts, and don't have to go to their friends, and get the wrong answers.

Of course when it comes to girls they do have to be prepared ahead of time about thier period. When I was 12 and I saw blood I had no Idea what it was. So I told my mother, because I was frightened. I am 65 years old now, I don't remember what she did or told me. But I do remember that I was scared out of my wits.

I wont do that lol. When he asks questions I tailor the info I give him to his specific age but at 11 - 12 when puberty begins I'll let him know the whole gory details. I think hearing about that sort of stuff from someone who isn't embarrared will stop the child being embarrased and thinking s*x is somehow wrong. I personally don't think the 'birds and bees' explaination is a good way to answer it. (sorry if this caused offense)

firstly what are the ages of your children??
if they are young say under 10 then keep it simple but if they are over 10 then they probably already know where babies come from, why not sit down with them and just ask ok lets play a game
who can tell me where babies come from?
who can tell me what a lady has every month?
who can tell me how not to make babies when with the one you love?
make it fun and tell them the truth if they ask you a question coz if your found to be not telling the truth they will find out one way or another and loss trust in you and you don't want that.

Because, Birds and bees both reproduce with out shame, and when you are discussing the finer points of human reproduction with you children, you want to remove the element of shame.
