Once you have held permanent resident status in the US for five years, or three years if you've been married to a US citizen during that time, then you can apply for US citizenship. There is a statement of renunciation of allegiance to other countries in the US naturalisation oath, but it doesn't cause you to lose your Australian citizenship.

If you want to verify whether taking US citizenship will affect your Australian citizenship, send a letter to the Australian consulate and ask them.

Australia now recognises dual citizenship which is why Rupert Murdoch was able to be reinstated as an Australian after he took out US citizenship. If you become a US citizen, you do not lose your Australian citizenship and you are entitled to two passports. Any benefits owing to you as an Australian will continue to be paid.

I think you need 7 years in the US. I'm a dual citizen by virtue or my mother's birth country. I'm sure l US Australian dual citizenship is doable, but I believe the US requires 7 years to become a citizen.
