Rimadyl is an anti-inflammatory drug. It provides safe and effective relief of pain and inflammation due to canine arthritis, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery.

As for the amox (amoxicillin): It's an antibiotic related to penicillin used to treat and prevent bacterial infections.

So basically your veterinarian prescribed a medicine that will help with any swelling/pain the dog is experiencing and provided him with an antibiotic medication that will help to kill the infection.

Just remember: If you ever have any questions about the medicine/care your animal is receiving ask your vet about it! Don't ever feel shy! I'm sure he'd be more than happy to give you a more thorough explanation.

:)

~Hope this helps!

No doubt you are worried!!! Poor thing.
I would (for ease of mind) simply call up the vet
and ask, even the nurse, to explain what it is these
pills are for exactly, because you are worried and your
afraid you didn't understand when or if you were told, I know I've done that with many trips to the doc...hear what they say but not really because your so concerned for the dog. I'm sure they won't mind. And as above I agree maybe with the pain (joint?) and the fever the vet is thinking infection (maybe of the synovial joints??). Anyway, you did the right thing by getting him to the vet and I'm sure they will find out what it is. Just keep the medicine going as prescribed and call the vet for more info on the meds. (you could also ask if there is anything addition you could do or give him that might help!!)

Good Luck and I certainly hope your dog is feeling like his old self soon!!!

Evidently the vet is taking a 'catch all' tactic. It's YOUR pet-make sure your vet answers your questions and tells you what he thinks! You have a right to know! Tests are expensive, and lots of times vets will fore-go these and treat their suspicions. Hopefully by the time you are to have the tests the symptoms will be much better and the vet won't have to do them. If the symptoms are not better the vet will have a better idea of what to test for. When pet's get older things get complicated--just like us! So glad you care about your pet--good luck!

I had a similar problem with my then 9 year old Shepard/St.Bernard mix. I took him to my vet because he was crying in pain when he would get up. Thought we would be having to put him to sleep. They gave him rimadyl and a cortisone shot. Good news was they think he fell down a hill(his path is behind my house and it is kinda steep. ) and pulled a muscle. Within a couple of days he was better. He is now 11 and still going strong! Good Luck!

I agree i think that it is being left to long for the tests. Rimadyl will give effect within 24hrs but then you should be investigating the problem sooner than later so as not relying on the tablets as they wont make hime better just help him (it is possible to stay on these for life)
Rimadyl is a pain relief used when problems possible occur in the bones/joint movement. Therefore he should be able to walk with more ease whilst on them.
And your others are antibiotics for him.

I am sorry, I had a similar problem , it just got worse and in the end when he wouldn't get out of bed for a walk or food I had him pu tto sleep. But it is early days for you yet; maybe your dog will be much better in a day or two! I hope so, I guess we hae to be guided by what the vet says. Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion at any time, just to be sure.

Your vet has done only half his job if he's treated your animal and hasn't explained to you what he's treating it for. Either that or you weren't paying attention! Call him and ask what's going on ... if he's not available a vet nurse will be able to look on the computer and explain it to you.

Shouln't you call your vet and ask since I understand your concerns.
I would presume the medicine was to bring down the fever and conclusions can be made only after the tests done and results out.

He may be developing arthritis from being older .In the morning his bones will be stiff from laying down and it may be causing some discomfort. Try giving him some cortisone stuff or talk to your vet.
