My WIndows Media Player cannot play .avi files. The sound is ok, but no picture. Why?

AVI is like a book cover - easily identified as a book, but if the writing inside is not your language, then you can't understand it.

Basically, you need to install the appropriate codec - which is likely either DivX or XviD. DivX is available here:
http://www.divx.com/
(Make sure you get the free version - they push the paid version too).

And XviD is available here:

Windows Media Player, especially depending upon the version, tends to be extremely finicky with file types. Your best bet is to download a third party player. My personal favorite is BSplayer. It's a free download that you should be able to find on www.download.com, which is perhaps the greatest website ever invented.
