Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
People who die in a state of mortal sin choose to be separated from God forever and go to hell
People who die while not in a state of mortal sin but with venial sins on their conscience will go to heaven.
With love in Christ.

Why is putting your hand in an open flame to be avoided?
Sin is sin for a reason: because it will hurt you - if not immediately, than eventually. God did not just randomly choose which things would be sin and which wouldn't - he wants the best life possible for us.
Sometimes the evil of sin is obvious - like "thou shalt not kill" - we can see the benefit of that... but what about not lying and always telling the truth? It doesn't seem to make that much of a difference until we think about the pain that it causes when we lie... lies can ruin reputations, break up couples, destroy families etc..

Because it's the only way to avoid having fun is to avoid sin. Must not have fun or you'll go to Hell.

There are two primary categories of sin: mortal sin and venial sin.
Mortal sin by a baptised person removes the person from the State of Grace and therefore denies them the reward of Heaven. A baptised person who dies with mortal sin on their soul will go to Hell.
Venial sin, on the other hand, while it requires us to do satisfaction for our sin and is deserving of punishment, does not bring us eternal punishment.
For a sin to be a mortal sin, three things are required:
the matter must be "grave";
the sin must be committed with full knowledge; and
the sin must be committed deliberately.
Thus, the sin must be a serious sin. There is no doubt that matters such as murder, theft, sexual sins (such as adultery, premarital sex and contraception), bearing false witness, etc. are taken sufficiently seriously by the Church to constitute grave matter. Anyone committing these sins, knowing full well that they are grave matters and nevertheless deliberately commits the sin, commits a mortal sin.

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ it is to be avoided because it is contradictory to how we are trying to live our lives.
If you're not a Christian, than I suppose sin isn't to be avoided at all. Enjoy.

that question is not absolute, not too long ago it was not a sin to have a slave and now it is in most countries, today it's not quite a sin to produce excess co2 but i suppose in the future religeous people will qualify that as a sin.
the answer for most people is so they don't end up in jail!

Following sin is following the King of all lies (satan). GOD is our FATHER and JESUS is HIS SON who came to earth that we might find eternal Salvation. Why would you not want eternal Salvation when it is available to you? Have you found JESUS CHRIST and become a part of HIS life on Earth? This is a great time to grab a BIBLE and begin. Send me a note and I will assist you in doing so. Have a great week.
Thanks,

2 reasons. One, it separates us from God. He is holy, without sin, and he hates sin. The reason he hates it is reason 2. Sin always hurts us or other people. Sin is premature death. If you give into it completely, you will die spiritually, and then, prematurely physically. Creator God loves life and wants His creation to be full of it. Sin also enslaves us. In the beginning we feel we are in control, but soon, even if we wanted to choose otherwise, we can't. Think of generations of alcoholics or wife-beaters. Sin in its mature form takes control of our life and kills us.

All sin is to be avoided because it can only lead to one outcome: DEATH.
Why death? Well, God must punish all disobedience. That is the rules and laws he set forth since the beginning of time. He cannot deny himself. He cannot change his rules and laws. His rules and Laws must be upheld otherwise God would be a liar and everything he ever promised to anyone and all is written in the Bible would be a lie.
According to the Bible there are two types of Sin.
Original Sin and our own sins.
Original Sin stems from when Adam and Eve at of the forbidden fruit.
Man was God’s greatest creation. In every way we were made like God. We have a Mind, Soul and Spirit. Man fell because he listened to the advice of another that was not in God’s and what was not in man’s own heart. It is ignorant and stupid to believe and to think that man did not fall. If man did not fall, what need would there be for a savior? If there was no savior, what need be for God? If there is no God, what need would there be for life to even exist? Life at that point would be meaningless. Suffering would be meaningless. Life at that point would have no purpose. Everything man has ever thought or done would be all for nothing. Life would mean nothing. Before the fall, Man did not know loss, sadness, pain despair, hatred and evil. Man did not know the toils and pitfalls of hard labor. Man was one with God. Man called “Adam” and women called “Eve” listened to another voice. That voice said “if you want to become like God” eat of the forbidden fruit. So man ate and liked it, hence the fall. I often imagine what God must have thought at that very moment. How many parents must have felt when their own children disobey and hurt themselves. How it must have broken God’s heart to watch man suffer. God is love. God is mercy. God is good. God loved man so very much that he gave to the world a savior. A son who would not only save us from ourselves, our pain, our suffering, our burdens but to restore us to be one with God again.
“For God so loved the world he gave us his only son, so that whom ever believeth in him shall not die but have eternal life ”. - (John 3:16)
Our sins stems from our own personal disobedience to God. Does this mean that God only forgives our sins once? Of course not
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times (and more)”
Even all the apostles sinned against Jesus. Peter denied the Lord 3 times, Thomas doubted Him, Matthew and Andrew ran away but each time the Lord is there to forgive them.
