I will have to enter agreement on the Canon Powershot S3 IS as well. It is NOT compact ... nor is it strictly point and shoot ... the best photos on it come from setting it on P or M and tweaking the settings. However, with it's 12x zoom, swivel LCD screen, great battery life, and excellent video clip quality as well as photo quality, it's one great camera!
If you want good optical zoom, then look at and try out the S3.

I would have to say Canon PowerShot S3IS, although it is not really compact with its size, and that it has 12x optical zoom with image stabilizer.

I agree with Rablo...... I have a Canon Powershot and love it.
It is 12x zoom + digital zoom w/ super quality.

check out the panasonics, they make models that have 6 and 10 x zoom and are alot smaller and faster then the canon model everyone is talking about.
