Here is what my mom gave the liberty on this bedtime business, when I was in school.
Her only rule is I have to sleep for 8 hours. And I CANNOT miss the school bus in the morning. Luckily mine was at 9am. So I always managed to stay up late some days and get 8 hours bedtime.
Letting the kids to manage their time (ofcourse with supervision) gives them the sense of being responsible. You have to tell them, that you will step in _only_ when things go wrong. And you should _not_ step in the first time they go wrong!. Just give them sometime...

I think all children go through this phase at least once. I remember when my sister complained about her bedtime once, my mom wanted to show her what it felt like to actually HAVE to stay up (when you become an adult).
My mom made her stay up and help around the house (to show her responsibility) until she practically begged to go to sleep.
She was so tired the next day she didn't mind the curfew anymore.
:) it's worth a try.

12 is a normal age he's feeling bigger (right on the verge of being a teen butnot yet) and staying up a little later plays a big part in that to kids. (i remember always wanting to stay up like my sisters got to) ans its vertainly not unresonable to listen to his feelings and come to some sort of an agreement unless his wants are jsut out right rediculous.
I'd say it depends on when he wakes up for school, he needs to be getting 8 hours of sleep. I would say at 12 years old 9pm-10pm would be a resonable bed time, and maybe let him stay up later on weekends. Maybe he can do something to earn an extra hour on the weekends even like extra chores.

The bedtime for my kids was set to 8.30 but my daughter said it was not really fair that she had the same bedtime than her brother. She is turning 12 and he is turning 8. So we agreed on 9.30 for her and 8.30 for him on school days.

Let him stay up as late as he wants (in his room only). He thinks he's BIG enough to make that decision. Then keep everything in the morning the same. He'll find its not as great as he thought. It worked on both me and my sister!

Tell him he is not in charge of what time he goes to bed yet, You are. When he gets older he can pick the time he goes to bed. Until then he has to go when you say.
