Where in California are you? Many of the trails in Cali are fine for a Hardtail. If you live somewhere like Tahoe (where I live) or Downieville...other places that are very rocky...full suspension is pretty much the only option. In many places, full suspension is still desireable, if not required. Full suspension bikes help keep your wheels on the ground, even after hitting small rocks (the kind that you would sort of "bounce over" on a hardtail), and that keeps you moving forward with less effort. They are also super fun to ride, because you can learn to "load" the suspension with your body weight before jumps or rocks you want to launch off of. This also helps you to slingshot through banked turns, like riding a motorcycle.
As for your size, many mountain bikes come in s,m,l sizes now. It will vary between manufacturers, but I would say you'd likely be comfortable on a medium, or 17" bike (or whatever the manufacturer's equivalent is). It is always important to test ride a bike, and have the shop fit you properly. They can change out certain parts to make a bike fit better, often at no charge.

A 19" frame would be fine if you were 6'2", but you're going to need something closer to a 16". if you're doing California trails, make sure you have the latest, most expensive bike on the market so you can pose with the rest of the Californians.

a million. i'm a former highway and song racer who has in modern years taken up go u . s . mountain cycling. lately I desire mountain cycling to driving on the line for some causes: a. even even with the reality that you may extra usually have minor falls at the same time as mountain cycling (because of the extra technical terrain etc), a minimum of you aren't from now on going to be hit by technique of a vehicle, bus or truck - which could for sure bring about a lot extra extreme injuries. b. frequently talking, mountain cycling can take you to extra scenic places. besides the indisputable fact that, I have talked about 2 mild detrimental aspects of mountain cycling: a. You seem very a lot laid low with a lack of health - i sense it if i'm mountaineering up a steep uphill on my mountain bike. b. interior the previous couple of years my mountain bike has needed extra established upkeep than my highway motorcycles ever did. The chain and rear cluster look to positioned on out a lot swifter than it does on a highway bike. 2. really, the extra you pay, the extra valuable your bike will be. So how a lot you spend should be determined by technique of your individual economic situation. no longer less than, i could propose getting a bike with all alloy elements. Rear suspension may be solid, yet keep in mind that it will upload weight on your bike and that you're going to frequently could spend so a lot additional funds to get a "twin suspension" bike that is as mild as a "not ordinary-tail".
