As of January 23, 2007 to visit the USA by air (flying) you will require a passport.

Not until January 2008 (at the earliest) you will require a passport to cross the border by land or water.

Those are the conditions set forth by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative passed in the USA.

It is better to get a passport if you can, no matter how you travel. If you lose your wallet in the USA with your birth certificate and drivers license; those replacemenst can ONLY be mailed to your home address. (not mailed to the USA where you may be stranded-unless you are near a Canadian Consulate) A passport can be couriered to you,

There seems to be some confusion here. Let me try to clear this up.

As of January 23, 2007 - all visitors to the United States by Air must present a valid passport to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

However, if you are visiting the U.S. by land (in a car) or by sea (on a boat); U.S. and Canadian citizens are NOT currently required to present a valid passport; rather a citizenship document (certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, etc.) and valid government-issued photo identification (driver's license, state/provincial ID card, etc.)

The passport requirement for land and sea travel is set to take effect in 2008.

there's a new procedure about that.. in the past you dont need a passport to cros the border but now you do.

here you go...Documents You Will Need to Enter the United States

Travel Documents for U.S. Citizens Under WHTI
U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents
Visitors/Non-immigrants

U.S. Citizens: The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will soon require all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted form of documentation to enter or reenter the United States. The program will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:

As of January 23, 2007, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

*Lawful permanent residents (LPRs), refugees, and asylees will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551), issued by DHS, or other valid evidence of permanent residence status or refugee or asylee status to apply for entry to the United States.
