There is visually four stars on the NZ flag resembling the Southern Cross constellation.

In recent times however, astronomers have noticed a fifth star, but still have yet to be determined. NZ is also currently debating whether we should change the flag to align to contemporary times i.e Conservatives vs New Age NZer viewpoints.

yeah there are 4 five sided red stars with white outline
type in "new zealand flag" in google image search to see a picture

4 red stars (the Southern cross).
Not to be confused with the Australian Flag which has white stars.
