Charles Khoury, at 32, is a self-taught artist who paints with the wit and freedom of a precocious child. Ever since he began exhibiting eight years ago, he has been filling his canvases with primitive images of the animals he finds in the private playroom of his imagination.
His latest exhibition, now on at Galerie Epreuve d’Artiste, brings us more of these creatures speckled pigeons, played frogs, prancing hyenas, bats, and wild-eyed scarecrows. Such images ordinarily would suggest the makings of a morbid nightmare, but they’re not. Khoury’s playroom pets are innocent and amusing. They provoke not fear, but smiles and affection.
Khoury’s linear drawing style, simple and forceful, resembles that of prehistoric cave art. His colors, though somber, glow with a quiet, gem-like light. Even the blacks, which dominate as the interior backdrop of his animal kingdom, are livened by textured patches of velvet vibrancy. In line, he is naïve; in color, sophisticated.
During a dialogue with these paintings, one is caught between the captivating energy of the animals and the seductive interplay of color.
If you aren’t an animal lover, the mysterious power of houry’s color will move you.
