Is walking a good enough exercise to lose weight? I am the only one in my family with weight problems. I really want to start being healthier as i am terrified of getting diabetes (i gain all my weight on my stomach). I lost weight when i was like 15, now i am 21 and i cant. I cut back and stopped snacking, and in the winter walked on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes a day. After a month or so i was still the same. Anyone have any suggestions? I gave up, but i am determined to now. I am hoping to maybe drop around 40lbs by July....is that unreasonable?
Thanks!

A weight loss of 40 pounds might be healthy for you. I don't know your height and body type. But 40 pounds in 3 months is not a healthy goal for anyone. That's three to four pounds a week - yuck!

Use the link below to calculate an ideal weight for yourself and go for that.

Try for a pound or two a week. Experiment with your weight loss. If a certain level of exercise and diet isn't enough, then scale back some food and up the exercise level. Eventually you will find the right level to lose a pound or so a week. If you eat less energy than you use daily, you will lose weight.

Of course, the advice of a doctor is always recommended.

Take your time and find a plan that gets you where you're going. When you get there, adding a few extra calories to balance your exercise will help maintain your ideal weight and be a little reward!

PS: one of the most effective and healthy plans out there is Weight Watchers. If you don't have a local chapter, you can join online.

You can probably lose anywhere from 25-30 pounds by July. I think it's really great that you are taking charge of your health! You are AWESOME! Walking briskly for about an hour each day is a fantastic way to lose weight; just don't start to eat more, thinking it's "okay" because you exercised. The food you eat is SOOO very important too! You are going to hear this over and over on here, because it is TRUE: Replace a lot of the foods you eat with fruits and veggies, replace regular dairy with fat-free dairy, and cut out all red meat, fast food, and high-carb foods! AND DO NOT EVER drink soda! I have a friend who didn't change anything about her diet and continued to not exercise, only she gave up soda cold turkey! She lost 7 pounds in a month! Follow my advice, and you will be on your way to a healthy fit lifestyle! Also, if you have a little chat with your doctor, she/he can give you some tips on how to lose the weight safely and effectively. Good luck to you! :D

if you want to maintain your current weight, you should be walking 10,000 steps a day. if you want to lose weight, you should be walking more so instead of walking, consider jogging & working your way up to running.
I used to be 40 lbs over weight & started running 6-7 days/wk, eating only raw foods (nothing cooked), no meats, in 3 months i lost 60 lbs & put on about 15 lbs of lean muscle, which is great! the more muscle you have in your body, the more calories your body burns at rest. maybe do some light strength training or weight lifting.

You've traditionally heard that nutrition and activity cross in combination in wasting weight. Without activity, you'll be able to lose a bit of weight if you are particularly chubby simply by no longer consuming all of the further energy you do not want. But if you are no longer particularly badly chubby you'll have got to starve your self till your frame starts to cannibalize itself, and that is particularly no longer well for you. I used to be on no account an workout style of man or woman myself. But approximately five years in the past I used to be identified with Type two Diabetes (and I wasn't particularly chubby both, I used to be within the 'yellow zone' at the top/weight chart). The medical professional instructed me I HAD to get a few activity or I might get a few horrible 'headaches' like blindness, gangrene in my toes, kidney failure, horrible stuff like that. I instructed him I wasn't an workout variety of man or woman. He mentioned 'Why no longer simply opt for a stroll? Just get misplaced within the vicinity for part an hour'. So I attempted it and, consider it or no longer (the ancient Me would not have believed it) I particularly bought into going for walks. I bought a pedometer and an MP3 participant and inside a couple of months I used to be as much as three miles an afternoon, in approximately forty five min. (no longer daily, probably 5 occasions per week). I truthfully seem ahead to my walks, ready to listen to the following bankruptcy within the audiobook. I misplaced 25 lbs, then I slacked off and received again five lbs, however I am out of the yellow zone, I'm on the most sensible of the golf green zone. If I did it, the sector's laziest man or woman, you'll be able to do it. You simply have got to get off your gigantic fats butt. Even simply part an hour an afternoon of going for walks can aid appreciably, you can see the outcome immediately (probably 2 or 3 weeks).

3 answers to your question 1. Delete the word "can't" from your vocabulary the more you say it the harder it will be for you to lose the weight!
2.Remove all fat from your diet eg eggs, oil for cooking, butter etc.
3. Start walking on that treadmill of yours and stop lifting your arm to your mouth as often as you have been.
Good luck
