It's a cat thing, he likes to lead the way. Doesn't he usually look back to make sure you are following. He is just having fun. It's being a cat and playing. Actually it's showing you that he has bonded with you and that you are friends.
Your cat will do a lot of things that you won't understand, he's a cat. They make sense to his little brain, but we will never ever understand a cat, that's what makes them so much fun. I just love watching my cats to see what comes next. After 17 years Emily has still come up with ways to comfuse me, and I hope to have her longer and for her to confuse me forever.

He's probably just looking out for you. He's probably running ahead to check out the room before you walk into danger. In the wild, big cats will often have one or two scouts who go ahead and stalk the prey until the others catch up. He could be mimicing this instictive behaviour. I don't think it's something to be concerned about.

cats are weird like that. My cats do it too. I often wondered about it myself, but think about what it would be like to be that close to the ground and have all that human coming at you....I may not be afraid, but I sure as hell don't want to be in the way.....that's how tails and paws get stepped on. I kind of find it funny, so I hope it doesn't bug you. Be careful on stairs....how many times have I nearly taken a tumble because the fat cat decided it had to be in front of me.

There's an old saying that "dogs have owners while cats have servants."
Cats often establish or display their equality or superiority by leading. Similar to their behavior of rubbing against your leg, which is like them saying, "I know you're bigger than me, but we are equals," a cat will lead because that makes them feel superior.
Just don't trip on them, and enjoy where they're leading you!

My 1 yr old neutered male does exactly the same thing. I think it is because they feel that by running ahead, they are being herded and that no predator will be behind them becuase you are there.
