Nakora: He said I was smart before, but when he says "clever", not "smart",
he means I am more than just book smart, I guess.

In my opinion: Clever and smart is not the same thing. Being clever has a trait of being shrewd: Getting your way with things or getting out of tricky situations. A clever person need not be someone bestowed with a good intellect but is someone who's mind works very fast and spontaneously. Being smart on the other hand has got to do more with one's general awareness and intellecutal capability. And I think both are mutually exclusive, a clever person need not be smart and vica-versa. Even though being called clever is not necessarily an insult, If your boy friend thinks you are clever and not smart ... you need to do some impression management and maybe change his opinion somewhat.
Where in Ireland, by the way?

Clever means skillful.
Smart means mental alertness and calculation and resourcefulness.
They're not exactly the same, smart has something more than clever.

Sounds like a put down, saying that you are not smart. If you are clever enough for his relationship, then you are smart enough, also.

Basically it means the same, with clever being the best....that means you are people savvy, and maybe not book smart. Honey, you are better being clever.

I don't what ireland thinks about insulting people, but I'd say calling you clever but not "smart" is an insult.

your quick on your feet. You can knock someone out of a chair with a come back...and you have a come back for just about everything....but maybe you are not book smart? Better to be clever, because if you can't dazzle them with brilliance you can baffle them with bull sh*t!

smart means you know alot of stuff... like facts.
Clever means you can work stuff out. Like puzzles and movies plots and bassically all sorts of things that have to do with thinking.
your bf is cool for calling you clever.
