Maybe it's an acid reflux condition that is worse when laying down. When you lay down the acid from the stomach travels up the esophagus causing pain or heartburn. If this continues I would cosult a Dr. I have to take Prevacid every day for acid reflux disease and I once had Helicobacter Pylori in my stomach. Maybe you have the same thing. You can be tested at the Drs office for that. It's a simple finger prick.

Heartburn is usually worse at night because you are laying down and the flap on your stomach allows acid to come up. Ive found that the Tums soft chews work great for my heartburn, especially at night because then I dont have to get up to get something to drink to take a pill with or mess around with the gross liquids.

1st Chloe what makes you think it happens only as you get older? I am 53 and don't have (and never have) heart burn or acid reflux. My dad died at the age of 70 and his dad died at age 83 without either. Also ..... S ....never mentioned his/he age. For all we know he/she could have been 25 years old....thus negating your "opinion" that only older people suffer from heart burn, etc....

nightnurse, citygirl, Alison, Irene & Turtle....you all seem to be right on target RE: eating late at night, gastric & acid reflux.

I agree with your assessmemt and recommdation to be evaluated by a physician. A thumbs up for you all!!

It could be two things.

Acid reflux, which is serious and needs a doctor to assess before you permanently damage your esophagus.

OR, it could be angina, coronary artery disease. These attacks often present as heart burn in the middle of the night.

Either way, it's time to see a real doc.

Could be even though it's the same food it may be to late before bed, you might be getting an ulcer, stress................It could be a lot of things. Try sleeping with another pillow, see if that works. If it persists you might want to go to the doctor.
good luck

Are you eating just before going to bed. Lying down getting gastric reflux (juices from the stomach).

As you get older it just happens. The fact that you are horizontal when sleeping makes it worse.
