Are certain punishments off limits or limited?

You commit an armed robbery as an adult and you can get up to 20 years or more depending on the state. You commit an armed robbery as a 13 year old and you will only get the number of years until you reach adult age. That's the simple difference.

Different states have different ways of handling punishments. Most juvie sentences won't extend beyond reaching adult age. Really serious crimes (murder) might.

One of the major things is that if you are sentenced as a youthful offender or juvenile, your records are sealed. And if asked "have you ever been convicted of a crime?" you can answer no. After so many years, if you don't get in any more trouble, your records are expunged. If you are sentenced as an adult, not only is the punishment usually more severe, but your records are open, and you cannot answer no to that question. 'Course I don't know what state you live in, I can only answer for my state, but I would imagine it's pretty much the same in every state.
