Herbal essences existed back then. So did a lot of stuff. If you want to find something specific that you used to love, try asking these people.

They specialise in tracking down things that people miss from the past. It's amazing what is still being made, SOMEWHERE.

I seem to remember Wella Balsalm, and White Rain. Breck Shampoo- everybody wanted to be the Breck girl. I know I used to love Clairol Herbal Essence, because I had super long hair like the girl on the bottle. But my father came home from work one day and said the whole bathroom and my hair smelled like a funeral parlor. So he wouldn't let my mom buy it any more. And then there was that horrible stuff Psst or whatever in a can. Like if you were in the hospital and couldn't wash your hair. You would spray this junk out and comb it out. And I do believe even Suave was around then. Pert. the bottom of the barrel shampoo, because it was made from all the leftovers. Kinda like baloney. Head and shoulders, Selsen Blue. Mercy, you're testing my memory.
