of course you can. when you curse God of course, you are only cursing your own failures or hardships.

take for example mel gibson in lethal weapon. he hated himself so badly because he could not save his wife, but he transferred his hatred to God.

That's true. But you can hate the "idea" of god and not believe he exists, recognizing that the "idea" of god has caused a tremendous amount of pain.

A particular atheist may say that he or she "hates god", but this person does not mean a physical god, but rather the idea of a god. One must understand the meaning of the words being used.

It's like saying "the sun sets in the west". The sun does not rise or set; it's simply an effect we have put inaccurate words to. Such would be the case of an atheist saying that they "hate god". It's shorter, easier to say, but, ultimately, inaccurate. Still, it gets the point across.

Of course you can't! You can't feel anything against something you do not even think that exists.

But if you are talking about atheists, then your'e wrong: atheists do not hate god. They simply don't think god exists. It is christians (and religious people in general) who hate atheists for not thinking like them.

You can't hate something that doesn't exist. You either hate god or he doesn't exist.

No, if you hate someone/something then you are acknowledging that they/it exist. So to say you hate something you do NOT believe in...that's just plain wrong. You have to chose "if you do not believe" or "if you do believe but have hatred for that"

We don't hate the idea of God. We hate what the people who made him up are doing to the world.

No. A person who hates a god isn't an atheist. S/he is an angry theist, and that's not the same thing.

A person can hate the actions of the believers of a god, though, and be an atheist.
