much has to do with the breed of dog one is trying to train. If you had read up on Miniature Pinscher history you would have found that when the breed was created it was done so with the sole purpose of performing what it was bred for without human intervention. This breed by nature is extremely independent and stubborn. It does not take to what most call "training" easily as in fact in most cases is too smart for its own good. The key to working with Min Pins is patience. Not theirs, yours. This breed will try ones patience to the max and is never a dog for a novice or first time dog owner. At this point you will just need to be patient and continue with a routine.

Please - don't be taken in by people who claim you can train a dog with a toy clicker. The first thing you should do is look into how guide dogs for the blind are trained.

Their training is much more complex than what you need for your pet, but the basics are the same. It takes time - you need to spend at least 15 minutes, two or three times a day working with your pet both on- and off-lead.

The first key is to train yourself how to train your pet - know your individual pet's personality (yes, they really do respond to YOUR personality as well), and make it fun for him. The second key is consistency, repetition and praise. Most dogs can understand a vocablary of somewhere around 100 words. Some breeds are more trainable that others - Dobermans are one of the more trainable breeds.

The four basic thing you need to teach your dog are heel (both on and off lead), sit, stay, and come on recall.

Your local pet store should have any number of books on obedience training.

This is one of the better web sites I have found.

No, he isn't too old. a dog can always be trained, however, if he has been allowed to run your life, old habits are harder to break. I will post some good sites, so please check back..
I think this is the best option for a stubborn dog> http://www.clickerlessons.com/

You can get the clicker at any pet supply. for less than $5.

there is no dog that is too old to learn unless they are deaf or blind. remember the 3 rules. 1. discipline 2. exercise and 3. affection. you need to get him to pay attention to 1 thing at a time. watch the dog whisperer on national geographic channel.caesar milano is great. listen well.

Just be patient our technique is this when our dog obeys as we give him a dogfood so he does it again and again. Treat him.
