Why is some hair curly and some hair straight?

Hair is curly or straight, depending upon the number of disulfide bonds between hair proteins found in the hair shaft.

The greater the number of links, the curlier the hair, and the fewer the number of links, the straighter the hair.

Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein, which grows from a sac called the follicle. Cells in the hair follicle generate keratin, and various other proteins, which become a part of the hair shaft. These proteins contain sulfur atoms, and when two of these sulfur atoms pair up and bond, they form a disulfide bond. If the two sulfur atoms in the same protein are at a distance, and join to form the disulfide bond, the protein will bend.

The amount of humidity in the air not only makes for what some label a "bad hair day," but alters the degree of curliness or of straightness of hair. This occurs when high humidity forces water back into the hair fiber, acts on its protein structure, and forces the hair shaft to return to its original structure.

People can temporarily alter their hair to force it into a straight state, or a curly state, but only on a temporary, not on a permanent, basis. When a straight-haired person gets a "permanent wave," known as a "perm," he or she is chemically forcing the making of strong disulfide bonds. The wave does not stay permanently, because new hair, which is straight, grows in as the "perm" grows out. People with curly hair may chemically alter their hair to give it a straighter appearance, but this, too, is also a temporary solution to a permanent "problem," with the same end result.

Purpose of The Human Hair

Like everything else in the world, our hair exists for a purpose. Why does it exist?

The hair is a part of our body's integumentary system. It serves as one of our many lines of defense. The short hairs found around the eyes, ears, nose, and eyebrows serve as our protection. The ones around the eyes, ears, and nose prevent foreign matter, such as dust, from entering the body. While the eyebrow reduces the amount of light that enter our eyes.

The hair also assists in touch reception. This is why all skin surfaces possess hair, fine though they may be, except in thick areas such as the palms of the hand and soles of the feet.

The hair can also serve the purpose of keeping us warm. When we feel cold our hair becomes erect and it creates extra insulation that makes our temperature rise a bit higher than our surroundings. It also traps air next to our body, thus, helping in the reduction of heat loss.

Besides these, it should also be noted that to most of us, the hair possesses a cosmetic value. This is probably due to the fact that our hair affects the way we look. That is why in most, if not all, parts of the world, shops such as beauty parlors, barber shops and the like have been established to cater to the pressing needs and wants of everyone.

Head hair protects the head from heat (sun) and cold. You can lose a lot of body heat from the uncovered head. This was only discovered a few years ago that is why newborn babies have cotton tube caps on in hospital, and when they are home.
In very hot countries like Africa where sun can strike the head and give heatstroke the hair is bent in different directions to fool the sun's rays. By the time the sun's rays have travelled the length of the curves bending this way and then that way it has lost its dangerous power. A blond Scandinavia in Africa without head covering would be smitten with heatstroke in a few hours......very curly hair is very important, it is an ingenious way of coping with the unbelievable sunheat. Be proud of it. I hope this helped.

what makes the curls?
it dependens on the genotype of that person's parents.
mom: Cc Dad: CC
you draw a punneet square and you get.CC CC Cc CC..where in here, C represents curly hair, lower case c just a carrier. so curly is dominant over non-curly hair, which affects a person's phenotype.

having curly hair is actually more dominant.
straight hair is recessive.
We have hair to make us look more unique and interesting. If everybody would be bald, that would be boring, wouldn't it?
