I've had this problem for at least 15 years -- waking up at night trying to swallow accumulated postnasal drip mucus, drinking tons of water, then waking hours later with a screaming full bladder. In winter it's worse because of the dry air, so I have a terrible night if I don't have a humidifier. Is this normal?? Does anyone else have this nighttime mucus swallowing thing?? Am I going to be chained to a humidifier for the rest of my sleeping life?

I have it and also my son does. I have woke up in the night many times choking on mucus and it is terrible,I feel your pain. What has helped me the most is flonase and mucinex. If you just boil a pan of water you wouldn't always need a humidifier but if that helps I guess you should keep using it. Ask your doctor for a prescription for mucinex. Also, high doses of vitamin c has really helped me as post nasal drip can be from allergies. I take 1000 mgs. I hope this helps!

I have found that a misting fountain has really helped me with my "nose" problems. It humidifies the air, but not with too much humidity as a humidifier can. Humidifiers can encourage mold, and you definitely don't want that~~ Keep drinking lots of water and try the fountain, I have found mine to be very helpful as I have significant problems with postnasal drip and allergies-

Your humidifier might just well be your problem....It seems like you have an overproduction of mucus...there are many drugs out there for that...also you might try elevating the head of your bed ...you can use bricks or blocks under the feet at the top of the bed and also try sleeping on several pillows...make an appt with an allergist and he can provide answers quickly...
