Being prepared to put their needs before your own.
Lots of love, patience, time and a life long commitment.

A good sense of humour, good friends and a supportive family is a great help.

The last figure I heard was 250,000 dollars to raise the kid till 21.
That's the easy part. It takes time and a lot of it. there's more to having kids than just 2 people's sexual parts working.
If you could sum it up in a couple of words, then it would have to be love and commitment. You have to love the kids, never hurt them and be committed enough to give up a lot of your personal life to include them. It's no longer about you but now it's about your kids.
You do things right and get lucky, they will make you so proud. You will revel in their achievements, and it will make you happier than if you achieved the same thing.

A good resource to this question (and easy read) is Dr. Bill Cosby's book entitled "Fatherhood". I picked it up and read it when I lived in Rome Italy (I was single then too!). It is a terrific resource and I strongly recommend it.

I have to agree with your other responders. Patience is the key item, money - though certainly necessary - can also be used as a "hush-up" distractor, but can not in my view take the place of your patience, time, and understanding.

Best of luck!

Patience. You have to put your heart and soul in it. You have to accept that YOU will learn something every day! You have to present yourself as someone to count on...you won't own your kid- you just are in charge of the values they will carry for all their life! It's an awesome responsibility but you will benefit from it more than a million dollars!

Patience!!!!!! Money doesn't hurt either, but lots and lots of patience. Children will try your nerves every chance they get. But you have to take a deep breath and deal with what comes your way. They are expensive too. It only gets worse the older they get. I wouldn't have it any other way though. I love my kid to pieces!!!
