My cat has a LOT of fur, and I brush him everyday, but he gained a pound or two and since then and now his hair has gotten mattey, to a point where its so bad I cut some of his hair off, you but you can tell he is uncomfy and he wont letme work the knots out of his fur, it must hurt him. I've tried everything, even shampooing him with cat shampoo. HELP!

I had a hymalain for 23 years and learned early exactly what you are talking about. FIRST AND MOST IMP. never do this yourself as a cats skin is like tissue paper and the clippers can get caught in the matts. There is a cut I used to get him twice a yr called a lion cut. It looks a bit weird the first time, but give it a week and they are like stuffed animals, so plush and the cat is so much happier! Just a warning, it is not cheap, I think I used to pay about 50 for the shave and then 25 for the stuff to knock him out for the cut.

Do not cut the matts, you will all too often end up with a piece of cat in your hand. It gets to a point with a long fur cat where you just can't get the matts out and then it is time to head to the groomers and go for as they call it the lion cut. Actually my cat looked adorable, I was sort of sorry when 6 months later she was back to her big fluffy state. It's amazing how they look. They leave the head, booties and the tail. I don't know how your cat will behave, but my cat left feeling old and unhappy and came back a kitten. She was 16 years old when I did this. All last summer she jumped all over the place annoyed my younger cat (3 years old) and played with all the lost toys. It was wonderful to see. We are thinking of doing it again. She really seems to like it for the summer. A friend of mine who has 3 long fur cats does it every year and told me the result but I didn't really believe it. So, go ahead and get the cat cut, he will thank you. Cats hate being a mess.

You cannot shave him, you only can cut his hair off a little. I know, I've got 2 very matty furred cats myself. What I have found helpful is a de-shedding comb. It is a handle with a razor on the end to brush thru the cats fur. My cats seem to like it. (I bought this tool at the Petfood store)

shaving your cat would probably be the answer, but the cat would probably be scared of the noise coming from the shearers, best bet is to probably cut as much off the problem areas as possible, try not to hurt him as he will probably run away next time he sees you with the scissors, just keep on brushing the area till it comes off.

I thnk the best thing for your cat would be to take him to a groomers....because you could risk cutting him if you try it yourself because your cat is used to it...so your local groomer would prob. be a better way to go..because they've prob. done it for a number of years and would be able to cut it at a length reasonable for your kitty!

That's a job for a professional - call your Vet and find out exactly who can do that for you. The vet will have the best advice.

i wouldnt do it yourself, just take him to a vet or pet groomer and let them either brush it out for you or shave it themselves. unless you want to end up with a lot of scraches...
