You can try, but I would say that you should be in control of your vehicle regardless of weather.

Even if you didn't see the stop sign because it was foggy, you did fail to yield. Obviously it was not your intention to hit or be hit by another vehicle. Just because you didn't do anything "willfully wrong" doesn't mean you were not at fault in the accident. It being foggy might help you in court if the fine is variable, which I doubt. But failure to yield is likely the minimum you could be charged with.

Take your lumps, the person you hit did.

I'm not sure what country you are in, but I wish we had cops here that would do that. Here's My 2 cents. If you couldn't see well enough to realize you needed to yield, perhaps you should have stayed home. The second thing that hits me is that if you failed to yield in fog, you were likely not driving to conditions, that could be construed as driving without due care, reckless endangerment or negligence. I think you got off extremely lucky! I suggest you suck it up, learn all there is to learn from the situation and move on, a wiser driver.

It tells me you were operating the car too fast for the weather conditions. Reckless driving. Hope you beat the rap.

It might be mitigating with your insurance company, but unlikely to be in Court.
